Sustainable energy for the finish area of the Tour of Flanders in Oudenaarde

03/04/2026

During the upcoming edition of the Tour of Flanders, Flanders Classics, together with sustainability partner Eneco, is once again taking an important step towards a more sustainable organisation of the event. This year, the finish area in Oudenaarde will be set up to be significantly more energy-efficient, with a clear focus on renewable energy and innovative technologies.

For the first time, an integrated energy system will be used, combining various sustainable sources. A 144 m² solar panel park will be installed, complemented by four battery storage systems and a fully renewable grid connection. This combination ensures that a large share of the energy demand can be met in a green and sustainable way.

Thanks to smart energy management, it is also possible to switch flexibly between different energy sources: solar power, battery storage, grid connection and—if necessary—a backup generator. This allows the most efficient and sustainable energy source to be used at any given time. Especially during peak moments, this results in a significant reduction in the use of generators and fossil fuels.

This approach ensures that several crucial parts of the finish area are powered sustainably. Among others, the stage in the fan zone, the finish arch, the finish trailer, the VIP trailer and the production zone will run as much as possible on green energy.

Sustainability is also a key focus in the partner zone on the Market Square in Oudenaarde. There, an innovative Green Solarbox 5P provides energy for all partner stands, enabling this zone to make maximum use of renewable energy sources as well.

For the installation and implementation of these technologies, Flanders Classics is working with a local supplier from Kruisem. This not only reinforces the sustainability ambitions, but also highlights local anchoring and collaboration.

With these initiatives, Flanders Classics, together with sustainability partner Eneco, reaffirms its ambition to make cycling more sustainable step by step.
