The Italian Marta Bastianelli (Team Virtu Cycling) has won the Tour of Flanders for the first time in her long career. The European champion appeared as one of the favourites at the start in Oudenaarde. She was able to win in a sprint with three. Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott) came in second, a surprising Cecilie Ludwig (Bigla) finished third.
After the passage on the Kanarieberg and Taaienberg, with 45 km to go, the peloton brok into several smaller groups. Almost all favourites were at the front, with Bastianelli, Van Vleuten, Blaak, Brand and Van Dijk among them. The Oude Kwaremont, the penultimate hill of the day, was decisive. A very strong Cecilie Ludwig rode smoothly uphill on the cobbles. She attacked with Marta Bastianelli and Annemiek van Vleuten. Kasia Niewiadoma was initially able to follow, but she was dropped on the Paterberg.
The chasers, with Chantal Blaak and Ellen van Dijk, couldn't close the gap. Van Vleuten tried to surprise Bastianelli in the sprint, but the European champion was faster in the final meters. Van Vleuten came in second, Cecilie Ludwig finished third.
