World Champion and strong flandriens at the start

15 October 2020

On the provisional list of participants of the Tour of Flanders there are many strong and motivated challengers for title defending champion Bettiol and world champion Alaphilippe. Van Aert and Van der Poel, among others, will do everything possible between Antwerp and Oudenaarde to win the last monument of the 2020 cycling season.

Riders and supporters have had to wait a little longer than normal this year, but on Sunday the Tour of Flanders is scheduled with an exceptional autumn edition. Just as during the spring, the best riders for the Flemish work will also be present in the autumn. Alberto Bettiol (EF Pro Cycling) can expect tough competition in his quest for a second consecutive victory.

That competition will come from Deceuninck - Quick-Step, which sends world champion Alaphilippe with a strong selection in support to the start in Antwerp: Declerq, Jungels, Lampaert, Sénéchal, Stybar and Asgreen. The latter was second behind Bettiol last year. At Lotto Soudal, that other Belgian WorldTeam, we are looking forward to Wellens and Degenkolb, 6th last weekend in Gent-Wevelgem. More Belgian power comes from AG2R La Mondiale, where Naesen leads the team, and of course from Jumbo-Visma with leader Van Aert. We are also looking forward to Benoot at Team Sunweb, but also to Stuyven who will once again be racing alongside Pedersen, the winner of Gent-Wevelgem, at Trek-Segafredo.

At Alpecin - Fenix, Belgian champion De Bondt has to support his team leader and Dutch champion Van der Poel. Colbrelli and Teuns will join forces again at Bahrain - McLaren and will also meet Trentin (Team CCC) and Küng (Groupama - FDJ), both strong in Gent-Wevelgem, again on Sunday. Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), despite a less good performance in Gent-Wevelgem, was able to show strong results and will take a shot at victory in Flanders' Finest on Sunday.

In addition to Bettiol, there are two more ex-winners at the start. For UAE Team Emirates, Kristoff will be looking for a second victory after the one in 2015. Terpstra also knows what it feels like to win De Ronde and will be able to make run the show at Total Direct Energie on Sunday.

It has been since 2014 that the winner was able to succeed himself. Whether Bettiol repeats Cancellara's trick, we shall see on Sunday. Stay safe at home and turn on that television en masse, because you can see more from a distance. Find the broadcast information here.
