Enjoy the cycling season to the fullest thanks to a change in the starting hours of the classics

26 August 2020

The 2020 cycling calendar is completely upside down, with a particularly busy agenda in the autumn. For example, all the postponed spring races of Flanders Classics overlap with the Giro. In order not to let cycling fans choose, but above all to let them enjoy all the postponed races, Flanders Classics now decides to change the starting hours of its classics, so that the women's WorldTour races end up in an attractive time slot.

Choosing between a stage in the Giro and a Flemish classic, Flanders Classics doesn't want to force the cycling fan to make this choice. In order for everyone who has been missing out on cycling for months to fully enjoy the postponed races in the autumn, Flanders Classics has looked for a solution. It will change the starting hours of its races, so that the finish of the Giro and the finish of the classics, for both men's and women's races, will not overlap. Moreover, this decision was taken in consultation with the TV channels, as they will play an important role in the experience of our racing season in the current circumstances.

TOUR OF FLANDERS AND GENT-WEVELGEM

For the WorldTour races Tour of Flanders (18/10) and Gent-Wevelgem in Flanders Fields (11/10), the timetables of the Elite Men and Elite Women have been adjusted in such a way that the women will arrive after the men. The Elite Men will finish in both Oudenaarde and Wevelgem about one hour before the planned arrival of the stages in the Giro, the women will arrive one hour after the Giro stage finishes. In this way the fan will be able to follow the finals of each race closely. As a result of this change, the women's races also end up in a particularly attractive time slot.

TOUR OF FLANDERS - 18/10/2020

  • Elite Men: start at 9:45 a.m. - finish around 3:45 p.m.
  • Elite Women: start at 1:45 p.m. - finish around 5:35 p.m.

GENT-WEVELGEM - 11/10/2020

  • Elite Men: start at 10:00 a.m. - finish around 4:00 p.m.
  • Elite Women: start at 1:45 p.m. - finish around 5:45 p.m.

"Given the extremely busy cycling season, we have adopted a flexible attitude," says Tomas Van Den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics. "In this way we give everyone the chance to follow all races to the maximum. Also, this was an opportunity for us to put the women's races more in the spotlight."

DE BRABANTSE PIJL AND SCHELDEPRIJS

The races on Wednesday, De Brabantse Pijl (7/10) and the Scheldeprijs (14/10), will have delayed starting hours and therefore later finishing times. In Overijse the Elite Men will still finish after the Elite Women, but at least one hour after the planned arrival of the stage in the Giro.

Flanders Classics is working out a similar scenario for the Scheldeprijs. Due to the delayed start, the winner in Schoten will be known at least one hour after the winner of the 11th stage in the Tour of Italy.

  • Elite Men: start at 1:00 p.m. - finish around 5:40 p.m.
  • Elite Women: start at 11:20 a.m.- finish around 2:20 p.m.

SCHELDEPRIJS - 14/10/2020
