Vincenzo Nibali has yet to make his first appearance in the Tour of Flanders. But that could change sooner than we think. The 33 year old Italian had made clear his intentions already to participate in "Flanders Finest', but has now come to an agreement with his team, Bahrain-Merida, to actually be at the start in Antwerp. That's what the renowed sportspaper 'Gazzetta dello Sport' says.
The Tour of Flanders was already on his wish list for quite some time now", explains Nibali's trainer Paolo Slongo. "We're not going to stop him from doing that. We talked about it the past few days and gave him the green light."
Especially the logistics make it harder for the Bahrain-Merida rider. The day after the Tour of Flanders, Nibali has confirmed riding the Tour of Basque Country. Those logistic problems could be solved with a private jet between Brussels and the north of Spain.
'The shark of Messina' is not expected to compete with the big classic riders such as Sagan or Van Avermaet. Nibali will ride the Ronde in function of the Tour de France. This year the riders will be presented with some cobbled sections in 'La Grande Boucle' stage 9. Nibali sees the Tour of Flanders as the ideal preparation for that stage in the Tour de France.
